Mapping techniques – Advanced Architectures: Seoul
Advanced Architectures:
INTERPRETATION:
Advanced Architecture techniques are used to graphically represent physical and invisible systems, connections, and processes through mapping and diagrams. In this example, residents in Seoul are tracked as they move through the city, identifying the hidden vertical traveling times that are a result of the city’s built environment.
PROCESS:
Seoul is home to many types of residents, and in this example a select group of ex-pats, Korean nationals, gyoppo* & ebyang** are represented according to their place of work/study, residence, and entertainment, and their movements across the city to and from these locations is mapped. As the jiahchul (subway) is the primary mode of transport for the residents in this sample, the process of moving through the city (primarily) through the subway is explored.
OBSERVATIONS & CONCLUSION:
The verticality of the urban areas have made a significant contribution to travelling times throughout the city. Commuters must take into account the time (that is not evident in plan) needed to exit subway stations, in elevators and across street underpasses. The following diagrams demonstrate the additional time incurred by these vertical distances.
